This specimen was mined from a cavity inside an ancient lava flow near Irai, Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil. The terminations of the lavender colored amethyst crystals are in excellent condition. They formed around slender calcite crystals making stalactitic formations.

The interior of this geode half is lined with lilac colored amethyst crystals from 0.25" to 0.5" in diameter showing pyramidal terminations and some prismatic terminations. The bottom was sawn to make it stand up and the front face of this geode was sawn and polished.

A complete amethyst geode weighing 365lbs (166kg) that has been sawn open and polished! The interior is completely covered with amethyst crystals that appear to have formed in 2 separate episodes of crystalization; first as larger 0.4" to 0.6" diameter lilac colored crystals, which were later partially to completely covered by 0.2" to 0.5" lilac colored amethyst crystals. The result is a rounded appearance that, at first glance, almost looks botryoidal (see close-up photo). It truly is very unique. Several 1.0" to 4.0" long translucent calcite crystals formed on top of the amethyst crystals. Some of these calcite crystals are partially to completely bi-terminated.

This exceptional specimen is actually a portion of the wall of a cavity in which early formed stalactitic/stalagmitic carbonate formations were later covered completely (along with the walls, ceiling and floor of the cavity) by 0.2" to 0.4" amethyst crystals of medium to dark purple color. This is a great example of what is popularly referred to as a "Uruguay Amethyst Formation".
