This specimen consists of a fine grained grayish-green phyllite matrix with a perfectly terminated octahedral magnetite crystal measuring approximately 1.0 inches (2.5cm) across!

This 6.6 pound matrix specimen has one very large octahedral magnetite crystal measuring 2.75 inches and also a few 0.5-0.7 inch magnetite crystals. This large magnetite crystal is the largest magnetite octahedron that we found while mining many tons of the host rock at this mining locality in August of 1992. This magnetite crystal measures 2.75 inches across! It has some damage on the lower terminations as shown in the photo at left, but the tip is in perfect condition. The matrix is a green phyllite.
