Alexandrite Information

Alexandrite is a very rare color-change variety of the mineral known as chrysoberyl. Gem-grade alexandrite is more than 1000 times more rare than diamond! There are very few locations that produce alexandrite of commercial importance. Most of our alexandrite mineral specimens & crystals were mined in Bahia, Brazil where a deposit of alexandrite in schist matrix was discovered in the 1970's. Most of these Bahian raw alexandrite specimens are not gem grade, although alexandrite crystals with small transparent areas are sometimes found there. A significant deposit of gem-grade alexandrite was later discovered in Brazil in Minas Gerais in 1988.
