Alexandrite is a very rare color change mineral variety of the chrysoberyl family. Under daylight, alexandrite shows greenish hues, and the color changes to reddish-purple hues under incandescent light. Alexandrite is mined today at several locations worldwide including Brazil, India, Africa, Russia and Sri Lanka. Transparent alexandrite is more than 1000 times more rare than transparent diamond! There are very few locations that produce alexandrite of actual commercial importance. Most of our alexandrite mineral specimens & crystals were mined in Bahia, Brazil where a deposit of alexandrite in schist matrix was discovered in the 1970's. Most of these Bahian raw alexandrite specimens are not gem grade, although alexandrite crystals with small transparent areas are sometimes found there. A significant deposit of gem-grade alexandrite was later discovered in Brazil in Minas Gerais in 1988.
